'Good matric results, but let's do better'

Kader Asmal, the education minister, has a new challenge on his hands - to fulfil his latest ambition of reducing the number of matric failures by half in 2001.

He said in an interview on Friday that this was what he hoped to achieve in the coming year. A year ago, he set a challenge for both educators and learners to raise the matric pass rate by 5 percentage points, from its level of 48,9 percent. This week he proudly lauded the fact that the results were a whopping 9 percentage points higher than last year - reaching a level of 57,9 percent.

While the minister is elated with the results, the Democratic Alliance has questioned their integrity. Andre Gaum, the DA education spokesperson, on Friday urged that the exam papers be "verified" by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) as soon as possible in order to establish whether they met international standards.

This would prove the integrity of the exams beyond any doubt, he said. Asmal stated that, as part of the strategy to improve pupils' performance, the education department was ensuring that South Africa's qualifications were internationally comparable through benchmarking question papers against those of other countries.

This year's results would be sent to Scotland This year's results would be sent to Scotland so that the SQA could benchmark the question papers against the Scottish equivalent qualification, Asmal said.

Washington D.C. - Ek het Kersfees oorleef. Net-net.

"Jou ma maak huis skoon", sê my pa.

"Dis nie Kersfees in my hart vanjaar nie" sê my ma. "Ek wil my kind by die huis hê."

Geseende kersfees.

Alles verander.

"Dis warm vandag" sê ek aan my housemates omdat ek net twee lae klere dra. Sien, dis slegs vriespunt, nie 'n paar grade onder vriespunt nie.

Ek voel Kersfees soos 'n vreemdeling, orals waar ek kom.

"What's wrong?" vra my housemate aan my.

"I'm missing Cape Town" sê ek.

"You're always missing Cape Town" sê housemate se blonde bitsige girlfriend. DUH.

My konteks.

Net goeie voornemens.

Kytie K.

Cape Town beach thugs get warning

Vandals and hooligans frequenting Cape Town beaches have been warned they can expect no mercy this weekend after an orgy of public drunkenness, lawlessness, and dumping of broken glass and filth.

Law enforcement officers at several Peninsula beaches said this week they had never experienced such a wave of mindless destruction, loutishness and disregard of general principles of public decency.

And tourism spokesmen warned that such behaviour could do irreparable damage to the city's potential as a holiday destination and, if unchecked, ultimately destroy the tourism goose that lays the golden egg.

Rick Taylor, the Cape metropolitan tourism chief, said: "I am disgusted at the way things have gone."

At one trauma unit only three of the patients treated on Christmas day were sober He said he had personally seen the mayhem at Maidens' Cove near Camps Bay on the Day of Goodwill, when revellers trashed the car park, stole cement blocks and chains and left a mantle of broken glass for municipal workers to clean up.

Mr Taylor said he had been "appalled" by the number of people openly drinking along the roadside at beaches.

He called on all Capetonians to take responsibility for tourism which "is everybody's business".

The city could not afford to have its valuable resources destroyed by mindless acts of small groups of thoughtless thugs.

Vandals have not limited their destructive behaviour to the beaches.

Herman van Deventer of the Camps Bay police said the windows of 13 cars were smashed in the area on the Day of Goodwill and in Table View a resident told Saturday Argus that youths had run up and down streets randomly smashing at least seven car windows.

At St James, nine bathing boxes were set alight by vandals before Christmas and more were damaged on Christmas Eve.

Clifford Krause, senior beach manager for the South Peninsula, said he could not recall having seen such vandalism in the past.

Taylor said the police would be pulling in all their reserves as well as volunteers to ensure a safe New Year for residents and tourists.

Pointing at a carpet of glass, broken bottles and other litter scattered near Strandfontein beaches, a beach official said: "I have never seen it so bad. Frankly there has been very little goodwill on our beaches this Christmas, rather it was a season of swill, over indulgence and drunkenness."

Several city hospitals said they had been extremely busy treating people for stabbings, assaults and gunshot wounds. At one trauma unit only three of the patients treated on Christmas day were sober.

In an effort to curb lawlessness, damage to municipal property and drunken behaviour on beaches, local authorities have vowed to adopt a policy of zero tolerance.

Law enforcement officers will target hotspots and enlist the help of the police to clean up beaches. Lawbreakers will be arrested, face heavy fines and could even spend a night in jail.

Mervyn Merrington, Cape Town acting director of protective services, said a zero tolerance stance would be taken and offenders could expect prosecution and arrest. All resources would be focused on the beaches on New Year's Day.

Law enforcement officers would liaise with the police for back-up this weekend.

Jurie Wessels, chairman of Western Province Surf Lifesaving, said the biggest demand on the services offered by clubs on the False Bay coast and Blaauwberg beaches was for first aid for feet cut by shards of glass.

Some of lifesaving clubhouses had been vandalised and there had been several incidents of theft on beaches.

Kendall Kaveney, director of water and waste for the city of Cape Town, said he had been appalled by the amount of broken glass in the car park at Strandfontein after the Day of Goodwill.

He said it appeared as if people had gone out of their way to take bottles to the car park for the purpose of breaking them. Even signs prohibiting glass on beaches had been torn down or vandalised.

Blaauwberg municipality acting amenities manager Cyril August said he had doubled up his staff shifts to cope with the litter problem.

In Mowbray on Wednesday, diners at a Thai restaurant were held up by three gunmen who threatened them and robbed them of watches, jewellery, cash, cell phones and car keys. Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made.

Security has been beefed up in Mitchell's Plain shopping centres following shooting incidents.

Terrified shoppers ran for cover when shots rang out in the Town Centre and a man was shot dead in the Westgate Mall. There have also been several reports of criminals waylaying people outside stores and robbing them of their purchases, watches and cellphones.

Mike Fabricius, chief of Western Cape tourism said it was of paramount importance that authorities had "a plan up their sleeves" to cope with the overload on services during the peak tourist season.

It was important for tourism to be seen not as the sole responsibility of hoteliers, tour operators and tourist associations, but as a business in which everyone had responsibility and a role to play.

Controversial Springbok Club back in news

Washington D.C. - The Springbok Club, a forum for exiles and expatriates with right wing sentiments, recently made it into the news in the South African papers with their controversial websites.

The edition of their cyber-newsletter in which former President Nelson Mandela was described as a terrorist drew the attention of the Human Right Commission.

Mandela was described in the newsletter "a liar and a bigot ... he simply played along to sell this falsehood of a hero and a martyr to the world."

SA Human Rights commissioner Charlotte McClain said the organizer of the Springbok Clubs, Alan Harvey's rhetoric undermined racial reconciliation in South Africa. She said that it did not constitute hate speech because it did not incite violence or hate based on race.

"It might be offensive but we have to be tolerant of divergent views. I am, however, concerned about the possibly defamatory statements about Mandela. These people are outside our jurisdiction, but it does appear to be a violation of his human dignity," said McClain.

The statements which evoked reaction within South Africa branded Mandela as "evil." "Mandela is a murderer and a liar. He only lived in poverty when it suited him. There is only one word to describe an individual who is prepared to engage in acts of savagery such as bombing and terrorism - and that is evil."

In an interview conducted with the American organizer of the Springbok Club, Ferdi Fourie, Fourie expressed moderate statements. He explained the function of the Springbok Club and his personal views on South African at present.

"Yes I am an Afrikaner. Personally I have been a strong supporter of the creation of a seperate state where we would have the majority so as to guarantee self-determination," Fourie said.

He said that their organization supports the "Volkstaat." "We still strongly support the people of Orania and are very interested in their success - even though I personally am a bit pessimistic, just for the fact that they are trying to negotiate a deal with a government that cannot be trusted."

He emphasised that supporters of an independent state faces problems. "The problem with the proposition is that there is not enough support for such a venture - this is largely a symptom of the loss of direction and belief in ourselves."

Fourie said that in retrospect, it might have been better for South African to remain a British colony.

"It would have prevented the communist take- over that South Africa have suffered now, and even if a black government was inevitable, the British government would've negotiated a much better deal for white South Africans." Fourie said.

He said both Rhodesia and South African would have been alive today, had they been in British hands.

He emphasised the fact that the Afrikaners should not hold grudges against the British from previous disagreements.

"It is a time to compromise so as to ensure a bright future for all our children."

Fourie said the heartbeat of the South African Springbok Club is in London at this stage, where it was formed a few years ago when the White Rhino Club and the Rhodesian Forum merged.

The Springbok Club also has supporters in Australia and Sweden. The organization has already formed "some fairly significant alliances with other nationalist organizations," Fourie said.

The US branch of the Springbok Club, is fairly dispersed all across the States, Fourie said.

"We have not been able to organize any kind of personal introduction to each other - I only know everybody on the internet - which has become our main means of communication."

"Tuiste vir Almal" skuld-belydenis

Washington D.C.

"Apartheid is geskiedenis!

Green was oorspronklik in die komedie-groep "Mel mel and Julian."

Zero tolerance - even for speeding ministers

The Gauteng MEC for sport, recreation, arts and culture Mondli Gungubele was arrested for speeding at the weekend on the N1 near Glen, outside Bloemfontein, police reported.

Sergeant Loraine Kalp of the Free State police said Gungubele was released on R400 bail.

Kalp said the MEC would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Mike Mabasa of the ministry of transport said on Sunday the ministry was particularly concerned about road deaths during the festive season and the arrest of the MEC was one of the indications that it was taking a zero tolerance attitude towards road offenders.

Proteas dominate 1st draw test

South African cricket skipper Shaun Pollock described the rain-aided draw against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead on Saturday as frustrating, but he didn't let that get him down.

The all-rounder was in a jovial mood at the post-match press conference, also chatting about a day-dreaming Makhaya Ntini and what it felt like to be the 300th victim of Muttiah Muralitharan.

"Ag, at least I'll be in the record books with him," a smiling Pollock said of being caught pad-bat off the off-spinner, the second-fastest bowler to reach the milestone behind Australian Dennis Lillee.

The captain also produced a light-hearted twist as he explained what had happened when he turned to look at Ntini at mid-on while running up to bowl at Chaminda Vaas, who turned away at the last minute, forcing the umpire to signal a dead ball.

"Makhaya's a bit of a day-dreamer in the field (and) he tends to wander a bit so I was just checking he was in the right place."

Guwahati - A wild elephant pulled a man down from a tree, trampled him to death and for two weeks has refused to part with the corpse, police in northeast India said on Sunday.

The man climbed the tree to escape a herd of wild elephants rampaging through his village about 140km from Guwahati, the largest city in Assam.

One elephant grabbed him, pulled him to the ground and broke his legs.

"The elephant must have got even more irritated as the villagers were trying to free the man," a forest ranger said. "It trampled him to death and took the body along with him." That was two weeks ago and it has been carrying the body around ever since, police said.

He said he did NOT want to be overthrown and would try to overthrow those who attempted to do so.

The banquet was boycotted by deputies of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change. Mugabe condemned the MDC for using mass protests and strikes as a political weapon and for suggesting the president could be ousted by violence.
