South Africa Ornithology - Self Drive Bird-Watching

Self Drive Bird-Watching

Self Drive Birdwatching Tours Lawson's Birdwatching Tours also cater for those who prefer to do it on their own or cannot afford a full guided tour. They design self-drive birdwatching itineraries and attend to all the necessary pre-tour ground work such as vehicle hire and accommodation reservations as well as domestic flight where necessary Clients are provided with detailed itineraries, route maps and vouchers, as well as bird checklists. They supply information on good birdwatching spots and list the "specials" to be found at these localities. The one big advantage of a self-drive tour is of course the cost. However, it should be emphasised that clients will definitely not locate the same number of species as a resident specialist guide would and also that identification of many species may be a problem without a guide to do this for them. Specialist guides also have knowledge of bird calls which someone from overseas would not be familiar with. Costing of course will depend on the particular planned itinerary and will be related to the destination used and the duration of the holiday. It is advisable for planning to be made well in advance to secure the desired accommodation and for Lawson's to attend to the many aspects in designing the best holiday.

Wilderness Trails

For a total birdwatching experience, Lawson's Tours offers guided walks from a comfortable rustic camp in the wilderness area of Manyeleti Game Reserve, adjoining a remote section of Kruger National Park where there are no tourist routes. The peaceful solitude is an experience in itself. The camp has elevated 2-bed huts under thatch, overlooking a waterhole where animals come to drink. There is a separate dining area, shower and toilet.Birdlife is prolific and includes raptors such as Martial eagle, Bateleur and Dark Chanting Goshawk. Large ground birds are plentiful and these include five Francolin species, three Bustard, Ostrich and Secretary bird. Endemics include Cape Vulture, Whitethroated Robin, Southern Boubou, Doublebanded Sandgrouse, Burchell's coucal, Pied Crow, Pied Barbet, Whitecrowned Shrike and Shaft-tailed Whydah. Trails are personalised and are conducted by an armed specialist field guide for small groups of 4 to 6 persons, with a minimum of 2.

Duration is three or four days but can be longer if requested and there is plenty to see and learn about for longer periods.
