 Subject: Moeder Dag in Suid AfrikaMessage: This Sunday its Mothers day all over the world. Not all of us are lucky enough to have our moms around to celebrate. At this time, I close my eyes and think about the special days with ma in South Africa. There was no special Mothers Day then. Every day was Moeder Dag. Picnics on the veld on Saturdays. Pa made the braai and ma fussed around in her blue apron. Skelling us jongspan out and giving hugs and kisses. She would close her eyes when the sunset singing of volks liedere started. Some were in Hoog Hollands. Trips to the stad to do shopping for school starting in January. Getting measured by the tailor Meneer Wessels under ma's supervision or getting those stiff old black shoes at Cuthberts. Shirts at OK Bazaars. Mixed grills in the kaffie and roomys for a treat. A special treat was a cowboy flick at the bioscope. Ma hated them, but she gamely came with. Her looks of disapproval when a girl friend was brought home to be introduced and her tears at the wedding as Pa tried to be un emotional. At school she was always in the front row at prize giving or at the konsert. How she winced when I sang off key or forgot my lines. Her looks of sadness as we showed her the stripes on our rears from cuts by Meneer Van Zyl. She used to put a soothing ointment on the welts. Her loyalty to the family. Her love of country, no matter what. Her devotion to God. Her tragic end. Lekker Moeder Dag Ma. Ons verlang aan U. | |
