Clanwilliam Museum (Old Goal Building)

Built in 1808 and housed in the old jail, this museum documents the history of the area, including all the inhabitants from the San up until the present. There are features on the 1820 settlers and the Boer War. Agriculture is also documented, especially the production of rooibos tea and velskoene. In the "Ou Tronk", the old prison at the end of the Main Road, this fascinating Clanwilliam Museum with old Voortrekker wagons and many other artefacts from the time of the pioneers. Clanwilliam is one of the oldest towns in South Africa. It is situated on one of the most spectacular dams (18 km long) in South Africa. In 1732, the Voortrekkers, the first Dutch farmers, settled along the Olifants River and in 1820, the English administration of the Cape established a Magistrate's Court here. In the beginning, the settlement grew very slowly, and a fire in 1901 destroyed almost all of the houses. The enchanting town of Citrusdal is at the foot of the Piekenierskloof and the majestic Cederberg peaks. It is one of the largest citrus growing areas in South Africa.

The village and district have several attractive historical buildings, of which seven have been declared Historical Buildings prior to 1980. Visit the Clanwilliam Museum (Old Goal Building) where tools and utensils used by the Bushmen are on display. Houses memorabilia from Louis Leipoldt and the Anglo Boer War. As one of the oldest settlements north of Cape Town, Clanwilliam features a number of interesting historical buildings including the original farm house of Jan Disselsvalleij (2 Park Street), the Officers' Residence between 1808 and 1858 (5 Park Street), the Old Goal Building (Museum), the Flower Church (Old D.R. Church) as well as an 1820 Settlers house, situated behind the Criterion in the Main Road. Historical guided walking tours of the town are available.
