Silvermine Circuit - A Historical walking and hiking tour of Cape Town

Silvermine Amphitheatre Circuit

Take an easy circular hike in the Silvermine Nature Reserve on the eastern side of Ou Kaapse Weg and enjoy magnificent views over False Bay, south to Cape Point and look down on Chapman’s Peak and the fishing village of Hout Bay. The walks begins from the Silvermine reservoir and takes on to the Noordhoek Fire Lookout, which offers scenic views of Noordhoek and Noordhoek Beaches, Kommetjie, and Slangkop Lighthouse. The route then takes us on to Elephant's Eye Cave. Admire the mountain fynbos and having heard the legend, explore the Elephant’s Eye Cave of Constantiaberg, before returning to the scenic reservoir, our starting point. This walk takes 3 to 4 hours. This is a half day walk which gives a glimpse of Cape Town as it was in it’s early years. Visit the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest Building in South Africa and stroll across the Grand Parade, the site of President Nelson Mandela’s Inaugural speech after his release. Learn a little of Cape Town’s political history in the District Six Museum. Pass the Cultural History Museum, formerly a slave lodge, before entering the Company’s Gardens, the site of Van Riebeeck’s original vegetable garden. Take a tea break here before the short walk to the Bo Kaap, our finishing point. This is also known as the Cape Malay or Moslem district, where the oldest Mosque in South Africa is found.

Note:
These are excellent maps and it is suggested that visitors to the Cape to purchase several (Table Mountain, Hout Bay, Cape Point) , and then use them. Very few tourists consider hiking proper (i.e. with backpacks, proper shoes and a MAP) when they come to the Cape Peninsula, and this omission deprives them of an unforgettably rich lifetime experience. This is an easy walk. Gravel roads, sandy and rocky paths. A modest fee is payable at the entrance gate at the top of Ou Kaapse Weg. The walk starts at the parking area just before the reservoir. There are well appointed braai areas around the Reservoir, and you can braai or picnic after your walk (your car is just 100m up down a boardwalk) – and enjoy a dip in the stunning water of the Reservoir.
