João Ferreira Fine Art (João ferreira gallery)

Specializes in contemporary South African art, with regular exhibitions of work in many media. João Ferriera Gallery was established in Cape Town, South Africa in 1998, and has gained a reputation for being one of the country's leading galleries for contemporary artists and art collectors.

Leon Botha is one of the longest living persons with Progeria, Greek for rapid aging. Born in Cape Town, he is 24 years old, an artist and musician. Leon has collaborated with photographer Gordon Clark to produce photographs for an exhibition called Who Am I? Gordon is a successful maker of commercials, dealing as he says, "with supermodels and soap powders", who has just returned to South Africa after living in Hollywood for 24 years.

In their powerful photo series Who Am I? Transgressions, Leon Botha and Gordon Clark have embarked on a collaborative and artistic adventure, a journey through different worlds and realities, exploring the questions of destiny and immortality. The two artists empathetically dare, and dare us to transgress and disrupt the order and comfort of life and explore the idea of what it means to be human.

"The idea of an artistic collaboration came from Leon," he tells me. "He wanted to play with the idea of mortality." The nature of time is very much on Leon's mind. "Nothing is still, things change all the time. I don't fear death, but I do fear what is going to happen between then and now, but I have faith in an energy that will provide. There are around 300 basic religions in the world but it never occurs to anyone that prayers are answered."

Hours: Gallery open weekdays from10am to 5pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.
