Whale Watching in Hermanus

Whale Watching in Hermanus

Hermanus, heart of the Whale Coast, is the place for viewing Southern Right whales on their annual migration north from July to November. Use the Old Harbour Museum telescope to identify the distinctive V-shaped blow. Witness breaching (leaping from the water), and lobtailing as they go about courting, mating and calving. Whale Coast Tours offer whale watching trips. The Overberg coastline is without doubt one of the most exciting parts of the country to view whales and few visitors leave disappointed or untouched by the experience.

Hermanus has the status of being the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. Southern right whales visit Walker Bay from June through to December and can be viewed from aboard a boat, an airplane or the shore. Hermanus is home to the world’s only Whale Crier who blows his kelp horn when whales are spotted along the central sea route. With a 12 kilometer stretch of cliff paths, visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the village, while being entertained by the antics of these giants of the sea. Whales can sometimes be seen from as close as five meters from the rocky cliffs. The Whale Festival has also become a feature on the town’s calendar.

Nature lovers from all over the world visit Hermanus to view these magnificent creatures from the the cliffs. Every year around July, locals eagerly await the arrival of special guests of honour, the Southern Right Whales.

Waterskiing, Wakeboarding, Parasailing is possible wherever there are facilities to launch boats, both inland on dams and along the coast. Favourite spots are at Grainger Bay, Langebaan Lagoon, Gordon's Bay, Hermanus, Theewaterskloof Dam, Misverstand Dam.
