This popular seaside resort offers some of the best diving on the south African coast with vast shoals of game fish and big groups of sharks congregating around Protea Banks.

Arena

A good chance of seeing game fish and sharks on this dive. Ragged-tooth sharks, hammerhead shars, Zambezi sharks, copper sharks or bronzo whalers, threshers and even the odd great white shark have been identified in this. If the current is not too strong, you will be able to explore the reef with it’s soft corals and the many beautifully coloured tropical fish. When the current is strong, a fast drift dive can be enjoyed and many game fish, various sharks and rays can be observed.
Location: On Protea Banks, about 8km offshore
Access: Approximately 15 minutes by boat from Shelley Beach.
Conditions: The Arena is way out in the Mozambique Current and is therefore almost always clear with visibility usually between 15-40m and never less than 8m. There may be a very strong current. It offers good diving year-round as it is not affected by run-off from the land. The visibility is best from November to May but most of the sharks are more likely to be seen in winter.
Average depth: 28m
Maximum depth: 35m.

The Caves

This is a big cave filled with hard and soft corals. The fish life is much the same as that at Arena, offering the opportunity to see big game fish and the usual small tropical fish. Like the Arena, your chances of seeing a variety of sharks are excellent. There is also resident potato bass.
