Gansbaai Backpackers is situated in centre of the Shark Diving Capital of the world, Gansbaai or Gansbay which is a short 2 hour drive from Cape Town. This choice Gansbaai Accommodation overlooks the traditional fishing Harbour with stunning panoramic sea views which can be enjoyed from the sundowner deck, in-house pub and outside Braai (BBQ) area.
Gansbaai is part of the Whale Coast with the Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary providing a nursery to Southern Right, Bryde and Humpback Whales, which are easily observed from the shore or a boat-based whale watching tour. Dyer Island is a breeding colony for Jackass Penguins and Cape Fur Seals. The narrow channel between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island is home to around 60 000 Cape Fur Seals and is a feeding ground of the endangered Great White Shark.
The local Birkenhead Brewery received its name from the HMT Birkenhead which ran aground in 1852 and in 1895 the Danger Point Lighthouse was erected.
