Noon Gun

As certain as death and taxes, Cape Towns noon gun has been booming away steadily atop Signal Hill since 1902, making the city's populace jump out of their shoes before exclaiming incredulously, 'Is it 12 o'clock already? The twin cannons used to be situated in the Castle of Good Hope until the British occupation in 1806, when the English came up with the idea of moving the noisy contraptions to this less populated hillock. All these years later, the gun-firing practice has been preserved, complete with gun-loading ceremony, except that now the cannon is remotely fired from the South African Astronomical Observatory in the southern suburb of Observatory.
