Castle of Good Hope at Cape Town

This pentagonal castle was built in 1666 by VOC commander Zach-arias Wagenaer to keep the Brits out and became the hub of the Mother City's administrative and military operations, Centuries later, the castle is still the military base of Cape Town, and if you happen to be in the mustard-hued courtyard at 10am or noon, you'll catch the marching castle guard and his orange, white and blue entourage perform the ritual key ceremony and firing of the signal cannon.

History lovers will be intrigued by the military museum, which features mannequins in army apparel, a spooky, black-as-night dungeon, and the Secunde's House, filled with the furniture of the time.
