Apart from Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, this is the only other shore-based breeding colony in South Africa. At Stony Point early last century, 300 whales were killed each year for their oil, but when the whaling station closed in 1930, the penguins started to breed at the abandoned station. Best viewing times: early morning or late afternoon when they return from their 20km fishing expeditions.

Hours: Daily (after hours by appointment).

Admission: R10; free under-6s free.

No- credit cards are accepted.
