The Department of Social Development has one state run facility that provides residential care to 80 frail older persons in Gauteng. However, the Department gives subsidy to 90 other frail care centers, 9 more centers are registered with the Department for subsidy but are presently in the process of applying for funding.
The total number of beds in the subsidized frail care centers is 10,072 of which 9403 are approved for subsidy. The majority of these homes cater for all population groups. The homes are having outreach programmes to keep frail elders as long as possible in the community.
According to the Aged Persons Act 81 of 1967 all homes that care for older persons must be registered with the Department of Social Development even if no funding is required. Therefore private Old Age Homes and Frail Care centers from. Retirement Villages must register. There are a total of 93 private homes in Gauteng.
