Bushbuckridge Water was established in terms of the Water Services Act and is listed under Schedule 3B of the Public Finance Management Act as a national government business enterprise.
Bushbuckridge Water’s primary responsibility is to provide bulk-water services to other water services institutions such as municipalities. The current water services authorities are Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM) and Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM), in the Nsikazi area. These areas are mainly rural and semi-urban with a population of about 1.2 million people.
Bushbuckridge Water is responsible for operations and maintenance of 13 water schemes and one sewage plant. This comprises of 10 water schemes in BLM, and three water schemes and one sewage plant in MLM. The average daily production is 137 million litres per day, which is supplied to the communities of BLM and MLM.
The quality of potable water produced complies with South African National Standard (SANS) 241 of 2006. The Bushbuckridge Water Board of Directors were appointed by the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs (DWAE). The board is responsible for setting all strategic objectives, monitoring performance and policy development. The management committee is headed by the chief executive officer and is responsible for the day-to-day business of the institution.
