Heritage Square

Dating back to the late 18th century, this cluster of Dutch and Edwardian structures is about as close as it comes to Cape Town's first shopping centre. Back in the day it housed everything from all manner of businesses including a rope warehouse, tobacconist, snuff maker, baker and even an undertaker. Today, the only reminder of this time is the solitary vine, which was planted in the courtyard in 1781. The place is now studded with a series of restaurants, most notably the popular wine bar Caveau, as well as the Cape Heritage Hotel.
