Operated by Gateway Airports Authority Limited (GAAL), the Polokwane International Airport is located in the capital city of Limpopo. Formerly a military airbase of the South African National Defence Force, the airport was handed over to the civil authorities in 1985 and renamed Gateway International Airport. The name was later changed to Pietersburg International Airport. However, to reconcile with the renaming of Pietersburg to Polokwane in 2003, the airport was again rechristened Polokwane International Airport. In 2006, GAAL produced a master plan to transform Polokwane International Airport into a Regional Logistics Hub servicing the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The R50-million new terminal building was launched on 21 October 2008. The building is capable of handling +/-200 000 passengers annually. This is four times the capacity of the old terminal building. This building has stylish written all over it. Polokwane International Airport is currently being serviced by Airlink. As the airport operator, GAAL is inviting interested airlines from the SADC and beyond to come and fly in South African skies and make Polokwane International Airport their hub within Southern Africa. The airport has a mandate to free the skies and allow traffic or aviation to thrive. All who want to fly from Polokwane are free to contact GAAL as the airport authority.
