The mine employs almost 750 permanent employees and produces 400 000 tonnes of premium hard coking coal per annum. The mine uses mechanical as well as conventional board and pillar extraction methods with secondary extraction by stoping. The coal is beneficiated using cyclones, spirals and froth flotation. The beneficiated product is trucked to Musina and railed to Mittal Steel SA’s works at Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng. Tshikondeni has coal reserves of six-million tonnes and a resource of 32-million tonnes.
