As a rule in car manufacturing, it’s advisable to pick one strong trait when designing a car and then stick to it throughout. The best cars are those that are self-assured. So it is always pleasantly surprising to come across a car that straddles genres, and does so with panache. The Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet (CC), with its panoramic folding glass roof, has always achieved this - and now the French manufacturer adds the style and punch of its GT Line to the open-top.

The new GT Line has extensive interior and exterior updates, with a reshaped central air intake and a gloss black centre station. The back bumper includes a colour-coded diffuses and the windscreen frame, alloy wheels and interior sport a dark metal finish. Inside, items such as the floor mats, pedals and dashboard now have brand detailing to remind you that you are, in fact, seated in a GT-Line model.

As befits its new status, the CC GT boasts a keyless card for a hands-free engine start, door lock and glove compartment operation. It also has an automatic parking brake and an integrated TomTom satellite navigation system.

The CC shares the same engine as the hatchback GT Line, a 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine that produces 96kW at 5 500rpm and 190Nm at 2 250rpm. A small wind deflector between the rear headrests will, says Renault, enable this car to transport four people in relative quiet. Of course, with a comparatively tame engine, the opportunity to ruffle the hair of anyone in the rear seats is limited, but to expect this car to be very powerful is to miss the point.

The slant of the very large windscreen may make the cabin a little claustrophobic for tall people when the glass roof is up. But driven as it is meant to be, with the roof down, it unfailingly entices the driver to take it out for long spins. It’s a perfect combination for those seeking the comfort of a coupe with sophisticated open-top driving.
