The Mother City's historic, and until recently run-down, Grand Parade, has been given a much needed facelift courtesy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup when it was transformed into a milling fan fest. If the name hasn't tipped you off, the square was originally used for military parades, but these days it's a buzzing open-air emporium where hundreds of stall owners sell everything from made in-China tracksuit tops to rolls of cut-price fabric. The imposing sandstone City Hall towering over the market was completed in 1905 and saw former state president Nelson Mandela make his first public address from its balcony after his release from prison in 1990. Today, apart from serving as the Mother City's administrative centre, it's frequently graced by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
