JARR Marine

JARR Marine’s Mike Paterson established the company in 1999. The company very soon received acclaim and recognition as Marina specialists capable of matching international Marina competitors by offering purely South African products.

JARR Marine is proud to be part of the World’s favourite Waterfront, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa, where it has designed and installed numerous marina jetty units. The Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island is the site of JARR Marine’s 48m long floating jetty from which the ferries embark. The Jetty is now a landmark of marine architecture in the V&A Waterfront.

The jetty is made of bolted modular units, which were floated into position around existing concrete and new steel pipe piles. The 48x8m jetty has a timber decked passenger deck at 1.8m above the water line and a berthing deck at 1.1m. The passenger deck is linked via hinged bridges to the terminal buildings. Swing gates on the passenger deck permit wheel chair friendly access on and off of the ferries. The berthing deck has a special rubber fibre deck bonded onto steel plates.

A special design feature of the jetty is its ability to absorb the impact energy from excessive berthing speed. The design accommodates all tide levels with friendly bridge slope angles. Flotation is achieved through locally made glass fibre covered polystyrene floats. The jetty is serviced with fresh water points as well as electrical power points and lighting.

Special care was taken in the initial design phase to ensure that the structure blended in with other steel bridge structures in the immediate vicinity. Apart from specialising in the Marina field, Jarr Marine has also designed and built small craft and installed and restored timber structures and decking.

In 2008 the Volvo Ocean Race marina with 24 meter long fingers was designed, built and installed for the 8 competitors. The NSRI slipway in Simon's Town was extended a further 8 meters into the water to cope with the larger rescue craft.

In 2009 Jarr Marine was commissioned to construct and install the floating lock gate jetties in the canal lock outside the One and Only Hotel. Additional jetties are being built to expand the berthing capacity of the Waterfront. Ultra Electronics, a British Company, commissioned Jarr Marine to design and construct non-magnetic fenders and cable support pontoons for the SA Navy.
