North & Robertson

Electrical and Mechanical equipment suppliers North & Robertson have been part of East London business community for more than 50 years and have had a significant hand in the development of the city and its industries. The company was recognised earlier this year for the role it has played in the Border/Kei Chamber of business since joining 43 years ago.

The company still operates from its premises in Recreation Road. The company has over the years built a solid client base in and outside the region, Supplying local companies, including yourselves, with a wide range of high and low voltage switchgear as well as mechanical seals and survey equipment.

The company was established in 1946 by 2 young businessmen, Mr. North and Mr. Robertson, who began building the atmosphere, which attracted a team of valuable and loyal staff and customers. "We strive to keep our staff motivated and happy, and they in return make every effort to keep our customers satisfied 24 hours a day seven days a week" says current co-director Paddy De Lacy.

Ironically, their first year business in 1946 ran at a loss and Mr. North pulled out leaving Mr. Robertson to steer the ship. In 1956 Robertson was joined by Harry Harrington, and together they became sole owners and co director of North & Robertson (Pty) Ltd. Shortly after that, Robertson moved to Durban where he opened another branch. In time, branches were opened in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and in the Transvaal & Transkei. North and Robertson changed direction again in 1988, when Robertson and Harrington passed away within 5 months of each other.

When the trustee of the company indicated that heirs were prepared to sell, it was decided that the group companies should be split, and employees Brian Tiltmann and Barry McLeod, who also recently retired, were given the opportunity to purchase the business the following year. In 1996, Brian's son, Brendan and Paddy De Lacy took over the business and have since been dedicated to company's success.

The company has been supplying a wide range of goods from high voltage equipment to switches and globes to a number of major East London electrical companies for decades as well as having won successful procurement tenders for local, provincial and national government contracts. The company has a client base of more than 300 customers.

We have a long and successful relationship with a number of local firms including Nestle, Da Gamma Textiles, Eskom, the Buffalo City Municipality, Johnson & Johnson, Arcadia Electrical, Performance Electrical and Shones Electrical who we were able to provide credit to the value of R8 million. They also have substantial domestic client base and supply electrical contractors and DIY businesses. North & Robertson has also had a long-standing relationship with a number of its electrical suppliers. The company has been an electrical distributor for Aberdare Cable since 1956.
