The Piano Workshop

The Piano Workshop is situated in the beautiful, scenic KwaZulu-Natal Midlands – an area of rolling green hills, sugar-cane and tree plantations, with a high annual rainfall and lush, green vegetation. This region, known as “Eshayamoya” (where the winds blow) among the Zulus, is a tranquil haven of picturesque farms, quaint villages and friendly, welcoming people.

The farm Mooiplaats, on which the workshop is located, has been in the Scheuer family since 1859. The paternal forefather of the Scheuers in South Africa, Georg Ernst Scheuer, was an organ-builder by trade in Zwolle in the Netherlands. There, he built organs in the company J C Scheuer en Zoons, together with his father and brothers.

Wonderful farming land could be obtained very cheaply in South Africa, and in 1858 Georg Albrecht followed the call of adventure when he and two of his brothers, as well as two sisters, decided to emigrate to South Africa. The rest of the family remained in the Netherlands.
