Perhaps this old saying is one of the reasons I chose ceramic design as a career and slip casting as the primary production method. Even though every single vessel is individually hand crafted and decorated, when seen for the first time and placed next to each other they appear to have been mechanically mass-produced.

the long hours spent in my studio decorating mug after mug with the same pattern has resulted in a uniformity of design and a professional, functional and well balanced end product.

The small country town of Fouriesburg, nestled amongst majestic sandstone mountains and vast farmlands in the heart of the Eastern Free State (South Africa), offers a relaxed atmosphere, a subtle earthy palette and the luxury of being in direct contact with this beautiful environment. An artist's dream. The influences are visible in the dry tones of the finished pieces.

My fascination for coloured clays began while I was studying for my National diploma in Ceramic design. The earthiness and rich hues of coloured clays seemed to offer so much more than the drab white clays being used by everyone else. I began experimenting with various clay bodies.

During my second year of study, an introduction to mould making techniques for slip-casting saw an instant fascination for the precision involved in mould making and this methodical process appealed to my perfectionist nature. Needless to say, I immediately began designing a range of planters and also a tea set to be slip cast. My beloved terracotta clay was traded in for terracotta casting-slip and I have never looked back since.

The subsequent range of planters that emerged from my first moulds were fun and exciting to produce, and were subjected to almost every kind of decoration technique known. This is where the decoration technique I use today on my tea and coffee sets was developed.
