Stroll down The High Street of Melrose Arch for a spot of window shopping and you’ll find yourself irresistibly drawn into Michael Obert’s gem of a gallery. Established in 2003, Obert Contemporary represents a select group of southern African contemporary artists including Philip Barlow, Dominic Benhura and Andrew Hollis.
The gallery has launched the careers of a number of exciting emerging artists, among them Vusi Beauchamp, Kudzanai Chiurai and Maja Maljevic. When asked about his ongoing involvement with fine art, owner Michael Obert replies simply: ‘This is what I do - and I don’t consider it work.’ Quizzed about his personal art preferences, he says, ‘I see so much art that my tastes have become really out there. I love comic-inspired art by Vusi Beauchamp and Conrad Botes. And I love the cutting satire of Robert Hodgins.
