South African Jewish Museum

It takes at least a day to absorb the sheer magnitude of this exquisitely curated museum, which traces the history of South Africa's Jewish community. The journey starts in the Old Synagogue (circa 1863, the first in the country), which is connected to the rest of the museum with a walkway representing the gangplank walked by the first Lithuanian immigrants in the early 1800s. The top floor houses an array of historical artefacts, including a solid silver replica of the Kimberley synagogue as well fascinating exhibits documenting everything from the gold rush and ostrich feather bourn to the Jewish community's involvement in the apartheid struggle. The lower half of the modern space is dominated by a life-sized reproduction of a Lithuanian shtet1 (small town) and Isaac Kaplan's collection of diminutive Japanese Netsuke figurines, and has also exhibited the artworks of William kentridge, Irma Stern and Mac Chagall.

Hours: 10.00am-5.00pm Sun-Thur; 10.00am-2.00pm Fri.

Fee:: R50 adults; R35 SA seniors; R20 students; R15 scholars; R10 audio guide.
